Debra J. Marshall is a visual artist living and working on Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung country in Naarm/Melbourne, Australia.
Her predominantly drawing practice is grounded within the exploration of landscape. As an ex-dancer, for her, the drawn line reflects bodily movement through an environment. She generally works in a site-responsive way so her methodology is a mixture of on-site sketching and reference photography, taken back to the studio for further investigation. The line of her pencil helps her progressively discover the tapestry of the landscape, and how she is situated within it.
Working mainly on cotton rag paper, her preferred mediums are ink, graphite, pigment pens and colour pencils. With these delicate mediums, a simple line can indicate form, and the addition of crosshatching can reveal tone, light and shade. |
