ARTIST NOTES: An exploration of colour and technique, this has been 'painted' only by palette knife, scraping the paint to give translucency, texture and depth. Although painstaking and requiring a steady hand, this is my favourite way to 'paint' as I love the beautiful textural detail it gives.
Landscapes in nature become darker with distance - this work plays with that reality, bringing the darkest shades to the fore, creating a striking and intriguing painting for the viewer.

ARTIST BIO

Diverse in her work, Liz is an Australian artist based in inner Melbourne. She is largely self-taught, disillusioned by inadequate art teaching at school, only confident to return to art as an adult. Dealing with numbers and calculations in her work life, art is a both a contrast and necessary creative release. Over the years she has exhibited at The Gallery, Mount Macedon, in the Gallery’s Creative Palettes exhibitions in 2006, 2007 and 2008 and taught art projects at commercial art/craft shows.

Liz is fascinated by shape and form, the relationship between them, the influence of colour and shadow on what we see, and is constantly inspired by the world around her, both urban and rural. A keen traveller, she is also inspired by the varying architecture and landscapes around the world particularly in Europe.

Liz’s subject matter ranges from stylised portraits, abstracts and still lives, moving more recently to exploring landscapes. The landscape of both Australia and the softer, greener lands of Europe are a constant source of interest and inspiration.

Liz has worked in acrylics, mixed media, water colour pencil, lino and mono prints, but prefers oils for its colour, depth, translucence, vibrancy and ability to layer and push the medium. She uses both brushes and palette knives to achieve texture and movement. Liz is inspired by the work of Sydney Nolan, Fred Williams, Mondrian, Miro among others.

Her work is continually transforming as she further explores the interplay of colour, shape, form and texture in her work. Liz has an intuitive approach to colour and composition, and is often surprised and delighted by the painting which emerges as she works. Her artwork offers but one interpretation of the presented view, playing with colour, geometry, planes, texture and the relationship between elements, often with a quirky addition to provoke and interest the viewer.
